Karnataka Forest Killing Recalls 2015 Seshachalam Woodcutter Massacre
· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
The recent killing of three Tamil-speaking men by Karnataka forest officials during an alleged poaching incident has drawn comparisons to the 2015 Seshachalam forest encounter. On April 7, 2015, a task force in Andhra Pradesh gunned down 20 woodcutters from Tamil Nadu near the Tirumala Hills. The Andhra Pradesh Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Taskforce claimed the victims attacked them with stones and sickles during a combing operation, forcing the personnel to open fire in self-defence. The 2015 incident remains recorded as one of the deadliest events in the history of red sanders smuggling. The recent Karnataka incident follows reports of an exchange of fire involving foresters and suspected poachers on August 15, 2026.
Why it matters
The incident highlights the recurring and lethal tensions between forest authorities and migrant labourers in southern India's forest regions. It raises concerns regarding the use of force by state anti-smuggling units against individuals allegedly involved in illegal logging.
