Karnataka Govt to Cancel Land Grants Violating Conditions

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister G. Parameshwar told the Legislative Council that the state will seek to cancel land grants or leases that have breached their stipulated conditions. He said the government holds about 32.51 lakh acres of non‑forest, non‑agricultural land and cited violations such as using land for other purposes, failing to renew leases after expiry, subletting and non‑payment of lease dues. Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to examine each case and submit proposals for cancellation. The proposals will determine which landholders lose their grants and how the land will be re‑appropriated by the state.

Why it matters

The cancellation of illegal or misused grants will reduce the state’s revenue losses and restore land for public or redevelopment purposes, directly affecting current leaseholders who may lose their tenure.
