Karnataka High Court Increases Accident Compensation for Homemaker
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
The Karnataka High Court has increased an accident victim's compensation from Rs 4.55 lakh to Rs 6.52 lakh, ruling that a woman's educational or professional background does not negate her status as a homemaker. Justice Chillakur Sumalatha presided over the case involving the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and a claimant injured in a 2013 road accident. The court stated that homemaking is a gender-neutral role involving service to family members, regardless of a person's qualifications or employment history. This ruling overturns the previous award set by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal in Bengaluru on March 13, 2018.
Why it matters
This ruling establishes a legal precedent for recognizing the economic value of domestic labor performed by educated or professional women in accident compensation claims.
