The Karnataka High Court has reduced the permanent alimony awarded to a woman from Rs 2 crore to Rs 50 lakh, while directing her former husband to pay Rs 50,000 per month for their two children. The bench upheld the divorce, finding that the marriage had broken down and the wife had established mental and physical cruelty. The couple, who were college mates, married in Mangaluru in 2011, later moved to the United Kingdom, and have two daughters. The family court had previously relied on WhatsApp conversations showing the husband's admissions of physical assault and expressions of regret to grant the divorce and higher alimony. The High Court bench of Justice D K Singh and Justice H Shanthi Bhushan noted that evidence must be assessed by looking at the marriage as a whole rather than isolated incidents, observing that disputes continued despite earlier reconciliation attempts.
