Karnataka Launches Borewell Suraksha Abhiyan To Secure Abandoned Wells
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
The Karnataka government is launching a statewide campaign, 'Borewell Suraksha Abhiyan', to identify and safely close failed or abandoned open borewells. Minor Irrigation Minister Ajay Dharam Singh announced that the first phase will focus on wells drilled under the Minor Irrigation Department, with subsequent phases covering other public and private areas. The government plans to implement a web-based reporting and WhatsApp system to allow citizens to report hazardous borewells with location details and photographs. Officials have been directed to create an action plan for the identification, verification, and secure closure of these sites to prevent accidents involving children. The initiative aims to ensure that no open borewell remains a potential safety threat across the state.
