Karnataka Minister B. Nagendra Likely to Quit Over Alleged Scam
· India · The Hindu, India Today, Times of India
Karnataka Planning and Statistics Minister B. Nagendra is expected to resign from the cabinet in Bengaluru to help the ruling Congress defuse an intensifying offensive from the Opposition. The BJP and the JD(S) have announced a 10-day padayatra from Raichur to Ballari starting September 1 to protest his continuation in office. The Opposition has accused Nagendra of involvement in the alleged multi-crore embezzlement of funds from the Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation. The Enforcement Directorate has filed a chargesheet in the case, and Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot is considering a CBI plea for prosecution sanction. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is scheduled to travel to Delhi on Thursday to discuss the resignation with Congress central leaders including AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Why it matters
The resignation alters the political balance in Karnataka as the Congress seeks to blunt opposition protests over corruption charges.
