Karnataka Prison DIG Arrested for Freezing Convict Release Using Fake Papers
· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times
Karnataka Police arrested Somashekhar, a deputy inspector general of police for the Kalaburagi zone, for his alleged involvement in releasing a life-term murder convict using forged Supreme Court documents. The fraudulent release occurred in 2018 when Somashekhar served as the chief superintendent of the Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara. Investigators stated that Somashekhar authorized the release of convict Shankar despite knowing the submitted Supreme Court documents were fake. The Parappana Agrahara police also detailed accusations in a remand application that the senior officer sexually exploited the convict's wife and repeatedly bypassed prison protocols to grant illegal parole. A local court produced Somashekhar on Monday and remanded him to police custody until October 9.
Why it matters
The arrest exposes severe corruption and administrative lapses within the Karnataka prison system, raising questions about oversight and accountability among senior law enforcement officials.
