Karnataka Seizes 565 Tonnes of Subsidised PDS Rice Worth ₹1.34 Crore
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Karnataka authorities have seized 565 tonnes of subsidised public distribution rice worth ₹1.34 crore during a three-day statewide crackdown targeting an alleged racket diverting Food Corporation of India grain. Officials registered six criminal cases under the Essential Commodities Act, 1981, and booked nine individuals while taking disciplinary action against two government officials in Belagavi district. The operation also led to the seizure of 24 vehicles valued at ₹3.41 crore, bringing the total value of seized property to ₹4.75 crore. Investigators intercepted a truck carrying 35,000 kg of rice at the Attibele checkpost in Bengaluru Rural district, tracing the consignment to Mandya-based Annapurneshwari Enterprises. Preliminary findings showed suspect entities traded 56,459 quintals of rice over two months against a legitimate purchase record of just 5,000 quintals for alleged illegal export to Africa via Chennai port.
Why it matters
The massive diversion of subsidised food grains deprives vulnerable citizens of rightful welfare benefits and exposes systemic vulnerabilities in public distribution supply chains.
