Kashmir court orders re-opening of UAPA-hit seminary

A Jammu and Kashmir court has ordered the re-opening of Siraj-ul-Aloom seminary in south Kashmir, five months after it was declared an unlawful entity under the UAPA. The court directed the formation of a supervisory committee with representatives from district administration, education department, and a reputable local figure. The order includes restoration of the seminary’s assets, such as its hostel and orchard, pending the final outcome of the petition. The seminary was the first educational institution in J&K to be banned under UAPA, following a government crackdown on 58 schools linked to the Falah-e-Aam Trust. The ban cited alleged covert links with Jamaat-e-Islami and financial irregularities, which the seminary denied as misconceived. Advocate S M Iqbal, representing the seminary, said the court emphasized that students’ education should not suffer.

Students and staff of Siraj-ul-Aloom can resume classes and access facilities immediately, ending disruption to their education. The ruling sets a precedent for judicial review of UAPA designations on educational institutions in Kashmir.
