Kellogg’s Removes Rice from Rice Krispies, Coco Pops Due to Weather
· Business · The Independent, BBC News
Kellogg’s has reformulated its Rice Krispies and Coco Pops cereals, replacing rice with rice flour and a blend of rice and corn flour, respectively. This change was implemented due to "changing weather conditions" affecting the quality and availability of rice. As a result, both cereals now contain wheat gluten, making them unsuitable for individuals with wheat allergies or coeliac disease. Kellogg’s stated the cereals remain non-HFSS and retain their nutritional value, but prominent allergen labelling is now required.
Why it matters
This reformulation directly impacts consumers with wheat allergies or coeliac disease, who can no longer consume these cereals. It also highlights how global climate patterns can affect food production and ingredient sourcing for major brands.
