· World · ABC News, The Independent, France 24
The High Court in Mombasa, Kenya, has sentenced Pastor Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the murders of 191 people. Mackenzie, who led the Good News International Church, was convicted of ordering his followers to starve themselves to death to meet Jesus. Prosecutors linked the cult to the deaths of more than 400 people, with many bodies exhumed from shallow graves at the 800-acre Chakama Ranch in Kilifi County during 2023. Justice Diana Kavedza ruled that 183 victims died from starvation while eight others were killed by direct homicide. Mackenzie was sentenced alongside 28 followers, including guards and gravediggers who assisted in the operations.
Why it matters
The ruling concludes a landmark legal case involving one of the deadliest cult-related massacres in recent history, holding the leadership accountable for the systematic abuse and death of hundreds of followers.
