Kenyan President Orders Tata Chemicals to Halt Operations

Kenyan President William Ruto announced on Thursday that he had directed Tata Chemicals to stop its operations in Kajiado, Kenya. Ruto criticized the company for failing to build local industrial capacity during its century-long presence in the region and questioned whether Kenyans were slaves to other people. The Kenyan government plans to bring in two new companies to take over the operations, including a glass company and a chemical manufacturing company. The announcement follows a directive in late July ordering the company's Kenyan unit to suspend operations at the Magadi Soda factory and halt soda ash exports. Tata Chemicals could not immediately be reached for comment regarding the decision.
