Kerala Assembly Passes Resolution Challenging Voter Roll Revision
· India · India Today
The Kerala Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution demanding the removal of Chief Electoral Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an investigation into the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. The resolution, introduced by the ruling Congress-led UDF, was supported by 137 of the 140 members, with only three BJP MLAs voting against it. The move has drawn criticism from the BJP, which accused the Congress of hypocrisy for challenging the electoral process that resulted in the party's own state-level victory five months ago. Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor previously suggested the SIR process may have contributed to the party's success in the March elections.
Why it matters
The resolution creates a significant political contradiction for the Congress party, which is questioning the integrity of the same electoral system that brought it to power.
