Kerala Assembly to Move Resolution Seeking CEC Removal

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The Kerala government is set to present a resolution in the state Assembly on Monday, formally urging the Union government to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. If passed, Kerala will become the first state in India to adopt such a measure. The resolution, to be moved by Chief Minister V D Satheesan, also demands the reinstatement of voting rights for citizens removed during the Special Intensive Revision process. Additionally, the proposal calls for reforming the selection committee for Election Commissioners to include the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The resolution is expected to pass with support from both the ruling Congress-led UDF and the opposition LDF.

Why it matters

This move represents a significant political challenge to the Election Commission's authority and highlights growing friction between state governments and central constitutional bodies.
