Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan has strongly opposed remarks by Sunni Islamic scholar Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar suggesting that women should remain confined to their homes. Speaking after a state Cabinet meeting in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan stated that such views do not align with the progressive tradition of Kerala and that women must participate in all spheres of society. The controversy emerged after Kanthapuram claimed at an Islamic conference in Kochi that bringing women onto public platforms leads to destruction. Satheesan countered by citing historical examples of prominent women in Islamic history, including Prophet Muhammad's wife Khadija, Aisha, and Queen Bilqis, to demonstrate active female participation in leadership, commerce, and governance.
