A district consumer commission in Kerala has directed Kalyan Silks to pay Rs 31,500 to an 81-year-old customer, ruling that the retailer's Onam 2023 promotional advertisement was misleading. The full-page ad prominently claimed that customers buying Rs 3,000 worth of merchandise would receive shopping benefits of Rs 1,500. The complainant purchased garments worth Rs 4,055 on August 27, 2023, but was given three Rs 500 coupons, each redeemable only against a separate Rs 1,500 purchase during September, October and November 2023 — restrictions he said were printed in tiny, hard-to-read letters. The commission's order, passed on August 21, 2026, awarded Rs 1,500 to the customer, plus Rs 25,000 compensation and Rs 5,000 litigation costs, and ordered Kalyan Silks to issue durable, legible invoices.
