Kerala Elephant Federation Launches Medical Camps for Captive Elephants

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, NDTV

The Kerala Elephant Federation has launched a comprehensive health screening initiative for captive elephants in Keralam following growing concern over rising elephant deaths in recent years. Medical camps are being organised across Thrissur, Kottayam, and Kollam, with the first camp scheduled at the Sree Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur. At least 25 elephants are expected to participate, undergoing tests for diabetes, cholesterol, kidney function, and liver disorders through blood, urine, and dung samples. Veterinary findings will be recorded on individual health cards issued to each animal, with plans to make the screenings a regular six-month monitoring system. Federation president K.B. Ganesh Kumar and secretary K. Mahesh noted that early veterinary intervention is vital to address the declining captive elephant population.

Why it matters

Captive elephant owners and temple authorities in Keralam must adopt systematic health monitoring to curb rising mortality rates among the State's declining elephant population.
