Kerala High Court Sets Aside Order Permitting Suspended SFI Students To Write Exams

· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday struck down a single-judge interim order that allowed 16 suspended Students Federation of India (SFI) members to appear for examinations at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit starting November 4. A division bench of justices Anil K Narendran and Muralee Krishna S allowed the university's appeal, noting that the students lacked the requisite attendance and had not cleared internal tests. The students were suspended on August 13 following campus protests that included a mock cremation of the vice chancellor and attempts to damage her car. Citing a 2017 ruling, the high court reiterated that students engaging in dharnas or hunger strikes in educational institutions are liable to be expelled or rusticated. The affected students have moved the Supreme Court against the high court's decision.

Why it matters

The ruling strengthens the legal authority of academic institutions to enforce discipline and attendance rules without judicial interference during campus unrest.
