Kerala Implements New VB-G RAM G Employment Scheme

· India · The Hindu

Kerala has successfully provided work to all families that requested it under the new Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025, according to Minister for Local Self-Government K.M. Shaji. The scheme, which replaced MGNREGA on July 1, 2026, is now operational in all gram panchayats across the state. Minister Shaji confirmed that work was provided to 9.32 lakh families despite concerns from some legislators regarding lost workdays and payment delays. The state government has allocated ₹2,544.42 crore for the program, with the Centre providing ₹540.07 crore for wages and ₹342.75 crore for material costs. The state has requested relaxations for digital attendance tracking in areas with poor internet connectivity, though the Centre has not yet agreed to these changes.

Why it matters

The transition to the new employment scheme impacts rural livelihoods and wage security for nearly a million families in Kerala. The ongoing friction between the state and central government regarding digital monitoring and funding could affect the consistency of future work opportunities.
