Kerala Minister Shaji Reiterates Stand Against PM SHRI Scheme

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Kerala Local Self-Government Department Minister K M Shaji has stated that he still maintains his opposition to the PM SHRI scheme in the state. Speaking at a Youth League event in Kannur on Saturday, Shaji remarked that his previous statement about throwing the Prime Minister's Schools for Rising India scheme into the Arabian Sea remains unchanged. While in the opposition, Shaji and his party, the Indian Union Muslim League, strongly opposed the implementation of the central education scheme. After coming to power, the ruling UDF appointed a Cabinet sub-committee to study the matter rather than cancelling the project immediately. Shaji acknowledged that coalition politics and collective governmental responsibility prevent individual ministers from acting entirely on their own.

Why it matters

The ongoing disagreement within Kerala's ruling coalition over the central education scheme affects how the state implements central funding and educational reforms.
