Kerala Police Register FIR Against Anto Augustine, Reporter TV Over Messi Visit Scam
· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
Kerala police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Anto Augustine, authorised signatory of Reporter Broadcasting Company, and the company itself for alleged cheating and criminal conspiracy tied to a failed attempt to host Lionel Messi and Argentina’s national team in Kochi during the LDF government’s tenure. The FIR alleges that fake details were inserted into the agreement with the Argentina Football Association before December 2024, and the accused conspired to secure the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor without paying the ₹5 crore security deposit. Searches were conducted at Reporter TV’s Kochi office and other linked locations as part of the probe. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) found prima facie evidence of financial misappropriation and tax evasion, though digital evidence remains partially inaccessible. Augustine denied involvement, claiming the SIT had not questioned him about the controversy.
Why it matters
The case exposes potential corruption and financial irregularities in Kerala’s sports infrastructure deals, raising questions about accountability in public-private partnerships. For Kerala’s sports and media sectors, this could set a precedent for stricter oversight in future high-profile events.
