Kerala Probes Potential Use of Expired Remdesivir in Nipah Deaths
· India · Indian Express, India Today
The Kerala government has ordered a formal probe into whether expired batches of Remdesivir were administered to Nipah patients between 2023 and 2025. Health Minister K Muraleedharan announced that a medical board will investigate the administration of the drug, which was distributed through the Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited. Records from the Kozhikode Medical College suggest that expired vials may have been used during these years. The state has requested that the directorate of medical education and the directorate of health services compile a comprehensive list of all patients who received the medication.
Why it matters
The investigation seeks to determine if medical negligence or supply chain failures contributed to patient mortality during recent Nipah outbreaks in Kerala.
