Keralam Home Minister Orders Crime Branch Probe Into Sukumara Kurup Survival Reports

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu, LiveMint

Keralam Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala stated that recent reports claiming fugitive Sukumara Kurup is still alive are unverified rumours. Chennithala directed ADGP Crime Branch Venkatesh to investigate the veracity of the claims and contact Interpol. Kurup remains wanted in connection with the 1984 murder of Chacko in Mavelikara, which was allegedly planned to fake his own death for a life insurance payout. The Home Minister also denied claims made by a retired police officer regarding an earlier report submitted on Kurup's whereabouts. The case has been classified as a Long Pending case by the Kerala Police.

Why it matters

The case revives public interest in one of India's longest-running manhunts, prompting authorities to verify international leads involving a decades-old murder and insurance fraud.
