Keralam Reopens Vigilance Probe Into Gyanesh Kumar Over 2006 Engineer's Death
· India · India Today, Times of India, Zee News
Keralam Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has ordered a Vigilance investigation into allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during his tenure as state Public Works Department Secretary. The probe focuses on claims of criminal misconduct in awarding public works to contractors and external influence in the 2006 suicide of Malaysian civil engineer Lee See Been. Been, chief project manager for the Indo-Malaysian PATI-BEL consortium, allegedly named Kumar in a suicide note related to the MC Road upgradation project under Keralam State Transport Project. The investigation follows a complaint by Congress leader Malayankeezhu Venugopal and comes amid opposition protests over Kumar's Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls. Earlier Vigilance enquiries in 2006 were reportedly closed abruptly, after which Kumar moved to the Defence Ministry on deputation. The VACB has been instructed to take appropriate action based on its findings.
Why it matters
The renewal of the probe directly impacts Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid national scrutiny over electoral roll revisions. It also raises concerns about accountability in public works contracts and the handling of past allegations involving foreign nationals in Kerala infrastructure projects.
