Keralam Working Hard To Overcome Power Shortage, Says Minister Sunny Joseph

Kerala Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph stated on Friday that the Kerala State Electricity Board is working to address the state's severe power shortage while urging the opposition to avoid blaming the current administration. Speaking in Kochi, Joseph noted that electricity demand had surged by more than 1,000 MW compared to the same period last year due to increased usage of air conditioners, fans, and electric vehicles, while power generation declined. He added that coal shortages across the country have compounded the issue, leading to a communication from the central government. The state cannot immediately enter into long-term power purchase agreements due to procedural requirements, and short-term markets lack adequate supply to meet demand. Although solar generation provides lower rates during the day, the state currently lacks sufficient infrastructure to store solar power for night use, though projects are underway in Kasaragod, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram, and Malappuram.
