King Charles and PM Burnham Preview Bayeux Tapestry in London
· World · BBC News, The Independent
King Charles, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham gathered at the British Museum in London to preview the historic 70m Bayeux Tapestry. The medieval artifact, which depicts the Norman Conquest of 1066, is scheduled for public exhibition starting 10 September and will remain on loan from France until July 2027. Officials confirmed the tapestry will be displayed flat to ensure the conservation of its 900-year-old fibers. This event marks the first official joint engagement between the King and the Prime Minister since the latter took office in July. The loan was originally announced by President Macron during a state visit to the UK in July 2025.
Why it matters
The exhibition serves as a diplomatic gesture intended to strengthen cultural ties between the UK and France through their shared medieval history.
