Kishtwar Minor Rape-Murder Probe Shifted to Crime Branch

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express

The investigation into the rape and death of a 15-year-old girl in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, has been transferred to the Crime Branch, officials said on August 29, 2026. The teenager was allegedly raped by her school teacher over several months and died on August 20 during a pregnancy termination procedure. A Special Investigation Team has arrested six persons so far, including the alleged rapist teacher and a nurse. Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch, Sarah Rizvi confirmed the agency has received communication from Police Headquarters and is in the process of taking over the case. The transfer follows public demands and a bandh called by Majlis-e-Shura and Sanatan Dharam Sabha in Chatroo demanding justice.

Why it matters

The handover to the Crime Branch signals a higher-level probe in a case that has already drawn street protests and a joint bandh in Chatroo, and will shape whether the accused face charges that match the gravity of the allegations.
