Kochi Police Chief Removed Amid Probe Into Luxury Car Crash Involving Judge's Son
· India · The Hindu, India Today, Hindustan Times
The Keralam government removed District Police Chief for Kochi City, IGP S. Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, on Wednesday following widespread criticism over the police handling of a fatal luxury car crash in Cheranalloor. Mr. Kumar is expected to be replaced by IGP (South Zone) R. Nishanthini. The crash occurred when a speeding luxury car allegedly driven by the 17-year-old son of an additional judge struck and killed a 55-year-old man. The police action follows the suspension of four officers attached to the Cheranalloor police station based on a report by ADGP P. Vijayan. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala acknowledged police lapses on the floor of the State Assembly after facing allegations that officers delayed action and treated the victim's family poorly.
Why it matters
The high-level removal highlights accountability pressures within the state police force following allegations of preferential treatment for a judicial official's family member.
