Kolhapur Man Arrested For Pushing Girlfriend Into Valley

· India · Times of India, NDTV

A 25-year-old man was arrested in Kolhapur district for allegedly pushing his 23-year-old girlfriend into a 1,000ft-deep valley after her family arranged her marriage to another man. The victim, Tarrannum Naik, was a third-year engineering student from Gargoti whose body was found near the Naikwadi waterfall in Bhudargad taluka. The accused, Sripad Vadar, initially reported to police that the couple had entered into a suicide pact and that the victim had jumped. Police invoked section 103(1) of the BNS for murder after chat histories contradicted the suicide pact claim and indicated anger over the arranged marriage. A local court remanded Vadar in five days of police custody while forensic analysis is conducted on both mobile phones.

Why it matters

The incident sparked local outrage in Gargoti, with residents marching to the police station to demand a fast-track trial.
