A devastating fire at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata's New Market area claimed at least nine lives after breaking out post-midnight on August 19. Initial forensic assessments point to an electrical fault in the switchboard or air-conditioning system on the second floor as the possible source. Five of the confirmed dead were Bangladeshi nationals, including four members of the same family from Kushtia district. Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari blamed the previous Trinamool Congress administration for allowing regulatory negligence and inadequate fire-safety infrastructure in congested buildings. In response to the tragedy, the civic body has launched comprehensive inspections of all commercial entities within its limits to address enforcement gaps.
