Kremlin Forces Closure Of Russia's Last Free Newspaper
· World · Hindustan Times, Al Jazeera
Novaya Gazeta, Russia's last remaining independent newspaper, is shutting down after being evicted from its Moscow offices and branded a foreign agent. Publisher Dmitry Muratov and editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov informed staff of the closure on October 26 following a break-in and threats of being declared an extremist organization. The paper, launched in 1993, had continued reporting despite having its website blocked and license revoked after the invasion of Ukraine. Staff members are now packing up the newsroom, which is located in a building named after the late reporter Anna Politkovskaya.
Why it matters
The closure marks the end of the final major independent media outlet in Russia, further consolidating state control over the country's information landscape.
