Krishna Byre Gowda Directs Action Over Broken Bengaluru Streetlights

· India · The Hindu, Deccan Herald

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has directed Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao to initiate disciplinary action against officials responsible for streetlight maintenance lapses. The directive follows a personal inspection on August 28 along a key central Bengaluru stretch between Hudson Circle and Chalukya Circle. The inspection revealed that only 82 of 222 streetlight poles were functioning properly. Mr. Gowda noted that the road connects to Kempegowda Bus Station and runs alongside the court complex and the Chief Justice residence, handling heavy daily traffic. Despite prior meetings and instructions issued to officials and contractors on August 4, the extensive outages remained unaddressed.

Why it matters

The directive holds local municipal officials accountable for public infrastructure failures on a high-traffic corridor in Bengaluru, impacting commuter safety.
