Krishnagiri Consumer Court Orders NHAI and Contractor to Pay ₹1 Lakh Compensation, ₹1 Crore in Damages

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Krishnagiri held NHAI and its contractor Shiva Buildtech guilty of 'gross deficiency in service' for failing to maintain the Krishnagiri-Hosur toll stretch. Despite collecting ₹919.91 crore in toll revenue from March 2021 to April 2025, the highway remained in poor condition with potholes, broken surfaces, and traffic congestion. The court directed NHAI and Shiva Buildtech to pay ₹1,00,000 in compensation and ₹15,000 in litigation costs to commuter P. Suresh Babu. Additionally, ₹1 crore in punitive damages was levied on Shiva Buildtech, payable to the Tamil Nadu State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission's Legal Aid Fund.
