Kuki man killed, 6 houses torched in Manipur amid shutdown over Meitei killings
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Unidentified assailants shot dead 45-year-old Paolen Khongsai while he collected bamboo shoots in Kangpokpi district on Tuesday, even as around six Kuki houses were set ablaze in Ukhrul district. A 48-hour shutdown was imposed to protest the killing of three Meiteis in an ambush in Imphal East on Monday, largely affecting five Meitei-dominated districts in Imphal Valley. Ukhrul police stated the arsonists fled without casualties at Patleijang village, while warning residents to avoid forested areas due to suspected armed men. Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for mischief by fire, and security forces were placed on alert in Imphal.
Why it matters
The violence deepens ethnic fault lines in Manipur, disrupting daily life for both Kuki and Meitei communities through shutdowns, arson, and suspended transport, while highlighting the administration's struggle to prevent retaliatory attacks.
