Kuki MLAs asked to stay away from Manipur Assembly session
· India · The Hindu, Times of India
The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki community, has issued a directive to Kuki-Zo MLAs to abstain from the upcoming Manipur Assembly session starting September 2, 2026. The organization stated that the legislative proceedings should not be viewed as a return to normalcy while the community's demand for a separate political administration remains unaddressed. The KIM warned that legislators who attend the session will be considered as deviating from the community's collective political stance. The assembly is scheduled to hold three sittings through September 7. Currently, there are nine Kuki-Zo legislators in the 60-member House, with six belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Why it matters
The boycott directive creates a significant legislative impasse, potentially isolating Kuki-Zo representatives from the state's decision-making process during a period of ongoing ethnic tension.
