Ladakh Groups Express Disappointment Over MHA Meet as Sonam Wangchuk Warns of Fresh Stir
· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times
Ladakh groups expressed disappointment following a meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs sub-committee in New Delhi because the Centre failed to present a draft for a proposed elected body for the Union Territory. Activist Sonam Wangchuk and Kargil Democratic Alliance representative Sajjad Kargili stated that no special progress had been made since their May 22 meeting regarding democratic safeguards and administrative powers. Wangchuk warned that a fresh agitation could be launched from September 19 to 24 if the government provides no concrete assurances. The groups are demanding an elected legislative body, constitutional safeguards for land, jobs and culture, and clarity on law and order distribution. The next round of talks is likely to be held in Kargil in the first week of October.
Why it matters
The stalemate directly affects governance and political representation for residents of Ladakh, potentially reigniting regional protests and unrest.
