Ladakh Launches India's First High-Altitude Snow Leopard Wildlife Safari
· India · NDTV
Ladakh has introduced India's first high-altitude wildlife safari to track snow leopards in their natural mountain habitat. The initiative utilizes open jeeps to navigate the rugged terrain, aiming to provide structured wildlife tourism in the region. Snow leopards are known for their ability to blend into the rocky landscape, making them difficult to spot during traditional tracking trips. The safari program is designed to manage visitor access while supporting conservation efforts for the elusive big cat. Officials expect the project to improve wildlife viewing opportunities for tourists visiting the high-altitude ecosystem.
Why it matters
This initiative provides a regulated framework for wildlife tourism in Ladakh, balancing the growing demand for snow leopard sightings with the need to protect the species' fragile mountain habitat.
