Ladakh Leaders Demand Legislative Assembly and Case Withdrawals

Ladakh political representatives met with Union home ministry officials in Leh on Wednesday to press for a legislative assembly headed by a chief minister. The Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance also demanded the withdrawal of cases against individuals booked during the September 24 violence last year and compensation for those killed. Representatives warned that failure to meet these demands would prompt a revival of calls for the Sixth Schedule and statehood, alongside a renewed agitation. Wangchuk and other leaders stated that the upcoming meeting in New Delhi during the first week of September must focus on the proposed legislature, financial powers, and constitutional safeguards. These discussions follow broad understandings reached between the MHA and regional groups on May 22.
