Lady Shri Ram College cancelled regular classes and shifted them online after a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped near Kalkaji Mandir in New Delhi on Monday evening. The college, located around 2km from Aastha Kunj Park where the assault occurred, cited student safety as its top priority. Police said the accused posed as policemen to separate the girl from her male friend before assaulting her in a secluded area of the park. The male friend was also allegedly beaten up and threatened by the accused. All three accused—identified as Hemant (a lawyer), Mukesh (a final-year BSc Mathematics student), and Asif (an onion wholesaler)—were arrested on Tuesday. Asif allegedly fired at police during apprehension, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which he was injured in the leg. The girl was medically examined at AIIMS, and an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
