Last US and UK Troops Leave Iraq as Anti-IS Mission Ends
· World · BBC News, Times of India
The last remaining British and American troops have left Iraq following a military presence of more than a decade. The final exit of around 100 UK military personnel from Irbil, located in the northern Kurdistan region, was coordinated with US forces who also departed. This withdrawal concludes Operation Inherent Resolve, the international coalition mission launched in 2014 to defeat the Islamic State group. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi stated that the mission's end marks the country's transition to full responsibility for its own security and stability. Iraq plans to observe four Sovereignty Days as a national holiday to mark the departure of foreign forces.
Why it matters
The complete withdrawal of coalition forces marks a major security milestone for Iraq, shifting primary responsibility for counter-terrorism operations and regional stability entirely to Iraqi security forces.
