Tamil Nadu Law Minister R Nirmalkumar stated in the Assembly that the killing of Amudhan, a third‑year engineering student from Malumichampatti in Coimbatore, was caused by a clash between student groups, not by drug activity as alleged by the opposition. He described a series of attacks that began on 9 August when fourth‑year students assaulted Amudhan and his friends, followed by retaliatory hits on 10 August, and culminating in a fatal assault on 11 August after Amudhan was left unconscious until 3 p.m. and later died in hospital. Nirmalkumar said that two criminal cases were registered and the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act had been invoked in the matter. The claim triggered a walk‑out by DMK MLAs led by Udhayanidhi Stalin, who demanded a clearer explanation and a CBI probe. Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu and Backward Classes Minister V. Sampath Kumar offered compensation and a government job to Amudhan’s brother during the controversy.
