Lawyers' Collectives Demand Resignation of BCI Chairman Mishra

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu, Times of India

Three national lawyers’ organisations, together holding over 700 members, have demanded the resignation of Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra after his controversial directive that barred 2026 graduates of Hyderabad‑based NALSAR University from enrolling with state bar councils. Mishra later withdrew the order and issued an apology to the students. The groups—All India Lawyers Association for Justice, National Alliance for Justice Accountability and Rights, and Queer Lawyers Association—charged Mishra with “arbitrariness” and threatened a no‑confidence motion if he does not step down. The collective sent a letter citing the incident as a breach of the Bar’s integrity and autonomy. They argued weak leadership endangers the democratic strength of India’s legal profession. A resolution against Mishra would require the support of other Bar Council members.

Why it matters

The resignation could trigger a leadership overhaul in the Bar Council of India, affecting regulatory guidelines for new lawyers and the profession’s independence, which in turn influences the governance of the legal system in India.
