LDF stages walkout from Keralam Assembly over police action at University Hostel

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

The Opposition Left Democratic Front staged a walkout from the Keralam Legislative Assembly on Monday after Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan disallowed its notice for an adjournment motion. The motion alleged an attack by Youth Congress workers on the University Youth Hostel on September 30 and the subsequent police action. CPI(M) MLA V. Joy and others held up a broken baton allegedly used by police to beat students, while Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan compared Kerala Police's role to Delhi Police's handling of election-related protests. The Speaker declined the motion based on Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala's statement that SFI activists jeered and threw bottles from inside the hostel, leading to a police crackdown in which 75 activists each from SFI and Youth Congress were booked.

Why it matters

The walkout highlights escalating political tension in Kerala over alleged police excesses against student protesters, with the Opposition arguing the state machinery is being used to suppress dissent ahead of upcoming assembly elections.
