Indian tennis legend and Bengal Tennis Association president Leander Paes has applied to join the All India Tennis Association roster of Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit in Bengaluru. The updated AITA constitution establishes a roster of 20 male and 20 female athletes, from which two men and two women will be elected to the AITA General Body with voting rights. Paes qualifies for Tier 1 status on the roster based on his singles bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The AITA has requested that the Union Sports Ministry expand selection criteria beyond traditional Olympic, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games achievements to include Grand Slams, ATP tournaments, and the Davis Cup. Elected Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit are also eligible to contest executive committee and presidential posts within the national federation.
