Leaner Indian Contingent Produces Fewer Golds But Better Return-Per-Medal At Asian Games
· Sports · Times of India, Cricbuzz, Sportstar
India's trimmed contingent of 495 athletes at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya won 85 total medals, comprising 21 golds, 27 silvers, and 37 bronzes. This output represents a decrease from the 106 medals won by 661 athletes at the previous edition in Hangzhou, China. Despite the 25.1% drop in contingent size and a 25% drop in gold medals, India achieved a slightly higher medal return per athlete. The medal count rose from 16 medals per 100 athletes in Hangzhou to 17.2 medals per 100 athletes in Nagoya. The Sports Ministry maintained that stricter qualification criteria restricting participation to realistic medal contenders drove the leaner delegation.
Why it matters
The shift to stricter qualification standards reshapes how Indian sports authorities select athletes for major multi-sport events, prioritizing elite medal potential over participation size.
