Learjet Parts Found Miles from Florida Crash Site
· World · LiveMint, BBC News, NDTV
US air safety investigators have discovered pieces of a Learjet 60 several miles away from the primary crash site in Palm Beach County, Florida, suggesting the aircraft may have suffered structural failure before impact. National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman confirmed that most of the jet's left elevator was located in three separate pieces between 1.3 and 3.8 miles from where the plane crashed on Sunday. The crash, which killed nine people, occurred after the pilots reported encountering moderate turbulence, ice, and precipitation. While the NTSB is investigating whether the loss of the elevator contributed to the accident, officials have not yet determined if the part broke off due to flight forces or as a result of the crash. Weather conditions remain a primary focus of the ongoing investigation into the fatal incident.
Why it matters
The discovery of debris miles from the impact site is a critical lead for investigators determining whether mechanical failure or extreme weather caused the fatal crash.
