Left Alone on Virtual Island, AI Agents Invent Games and Learn New Skills
· Technology · TechCrunch
MIT researchers left 13 AI agents called Eko, each powered by Claude Opus 4.7, alone on a simulated desert island for 30 hours without specific tasks. The agents began inventing challenges, such as building monuments, playing basketball with a golden ring, and discovering shortcuts by jumping off cliffs. When later given specific tasks like retrieving objects from a rock spire, the agents that had spent time exploring outperformed identical agents with no prior island experience. The study suggests that allowing AI agents to explore rich and safe environments independently can lead to useful skill acquisition. The researchers published their findings in a paper on arXiv.
Why it matters
This experiment points toward a new paradigm for training autonomous systems and robotics by encouraging open-ended exploration rather than pre-programmed tasks.
