Liverpool Midfielder Florian Wirtz Faces Calls to Be Dropped
· Sports · BBC Sport
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola faces mounting pressure to drop attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz following a string of poor performances. Despite a £116m transfer fee, the 23-year-old has managed only one assist in seven appearances this season and failed to record a goal involvement against any top-10 Premier League team last year. Former defender Steven Warnock noted that Wirtz struggles to impact matches, often drifting out of play for extended periods. Meanwhile, Rayan Cherki, who joined Manchester City for £30m in June 2025, has already recorded 16 goals and 18 assists in 65 appearances. Pundit Jamie Carragher has publicly urged Iraola to remove Wirtz from the starting lineup to address Liverpool's ongoing struggles with creating chances.
Why it matters
The underperformance of a record-signing player directly impacts Liverpool's ability to compete in the Premier League and creates a tactical dilemma for manager Andoni Iraola regarding his starting squad.
