Locked emergency exits on every floor, an absent staff member holding the keys, and a defunct fire-alarm system caused eight deaths in a hotel fire in West Bengal's pilgrimage town Tarapith early Monday. Police and fire brigade officials discovered the victims' bodies on staircases and corridors after guests became trapped while trying to escape. State fire and emergency services minister Kaushik Chowdhury confirmed that external emergency staircases were locked and stated that investigators are checking the hotel's fire-fighting equipment. Survivors reported a total power cut, heavy smoke, and a lack of working water sprinklers or operable fire extinguishers. Police rescued trapped guests from balconies and bathrooms using ladders after about 45 minutes.
