Lockheed Martin Bids For $10.5 Billion Indian Military Aircraft Contract

· Business · Times of India, NDTV

Lockheed Martin plans to significantly expand its manufacturing capabilities in India if it wins the country's $10.5 billion medium transport aircraft contract. The US aerospace major aims to build on its existing production partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited in Hyderabad, where it already manufactures the C-130J Super Hercules empennage and tail assembly. India issued a tender in August to procure 60 new military transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force to modernise and replace its ageing fleet, particularly the An-32. Competitors in the race include Mahindra Group, Adani Defence & Aerospace, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, and Reliance Defence, all expected to partner with global manufacturers. Dan Tenney, senior vice president of global business development and strategy at Lockheed Martin, confirmed the expansion plans during discussions on the procurement programme.

Why it matters

The $10.5 billion contract will modernise the Indian Air Force's aging transport fleet and deepen domestic aerospace manufacturing through local partnerships.
